If you are looking to put a little cash in your pocket and have some jewelry on hand that you would like to get out of your way, selling jewelry to a pawn shop is an easy way to go. You can walk into a pawn shop with your jewelry and come out with cash on hand within a few minutes in most cases. Even though most pawn shops will offer you a fair price for whatever jewelry pieces you bring in, you have a lot of impact on just how much your jewelry brings. There is an easy-to-remember ABC rule set to help you get the most for your jewelry from a pawn shop.

Always know what you have for sale.

If you walk into a pawn shop with a high-end piece of jewelry without knowing its value,  there is a chance that you will not get an offer that is anything near the actual value of your item. Make sure before you take something into the pawn shop, you know what it is exactly. You should know:

  • what type of material the jewelry is made out of, such as 14k gold or sterling silver
  • if the jewelry is brand name
  • the approximate age of the jewelry

Be sure to clean the jewelry and make it presentable.

Pawn brokers want pieces that they can quickly place in their display case for sale without a lot of effort on their part. If you take in a silver piece that is tarnished or gold that hasn't been cleaned in years, the pawn shop will not offer you as much as they would if the jewelry were clean and ready for sale. Furthermore, the cleaner the jewelry is, the more appealing and valuable it will appear to the pawn broker and the easier it will be to spot markings and notations that represent brand and quality.

Check the authenticity of gemstones.

Diamonds, sapphires, and other gemstones can be quite valuable, but there are jewelry pieces that contain synthetic stones that have no real value at all. Be sure you know the authenticity of the gemstones in the jewelry pieces you plan to sell so you can get the most money. Obtain a certificate of authenticity from the Gem Certification and Assurance Lab if your stone is real and take it along with you to the pawn shop. This documentation will prove without question that your jewelry has authentic stones and is valuable.
